Introduction
History of the Faculty of Applied Sciences
The Faculty of Science was established in 1962 with the admission of the first batch of students for the traditional courses in Physical and Biological Sciences leading to the award of a three year general degree. There was then only a single Department of Science with a few staff members and grossly inadequate facilities. The much needed improvements in the facilities and academic standards were introduced in 1965 with the appointment of a Professor of Chemistry who functioned as the Dean of the Faculty. Hereafter a Professor of Zoology was appointed followed by Professors of Mathematics, Physics and Botany. This began the development phase of the Science Faculty. Four Departments of study Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology were created to replace the two Departments of Physical and Biological sciences.
Then new Departments, Department of Forestry and Environment Studies, Department of Statistics and Computer Science and Department of Food Science and Technology were established in 1996, 1998 and 2005 respectively.
