The Masters Degree program in Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management is designed to meet the increasing need for highly skilled multidisciplinary managers, biologists or biologically literate mathematicians and statisticians in order to address the management challenges of the present day aquatic resources.

Course Structure

Two years in duration, starting from January 2010. Program includes both taught and non-taught elements as well as individual research project. Lectures are conducted during weekends.

Medium

All lectures are given in English. A good working knowledge of English is therefore essential.

Entry requirements

  • A first degree in Biological Sciences (Zoology, Botany, Forestry, Environmental Science, Microbiology, Marine/Freshwater Biology, Agriculture).
  • B.VSc. (Veterinary Science), B.Sc. in Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Geology or Oceanography (Possession of a Biological Science background is preferred).
  • Any other degree with at least 5 years of experience in the field of fisheries or aquatic resources*.
  • Any other special qualifications* considered appropriate by the Board of Study in Life Sciences.

(* these categories required to sit for a qualifying examination)

Candidates have option to register for a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) first and upgrade to MSc degree after one year.

Target groups:

Resource managers, young scientists and educators in the fields of fisheries, aquatic resources and environment in government, non government and private sector institutions. The course is also suitable for graduates seeking entry to above institutions.

Course fee:

Rs. 110,000 (Payable in two installments)

An application fee of Rs. 350.00 is payable at any branch of the Peoples’ Bank to University’s Account Number 1-62-004031-6 (Peoples Bank, Gangodawila). Applications, paying-in vouchers and further information can be obtained from,

Duly completed applications should be sent to “The Senior Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Gangodawila, Nugegoda on or before 30th December 2009. Please indicate “Application for MSc in Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Management” on the top left hand corner of the envelope.
