The ACCA (UK) Accredits the Accounting Undergraduate Degree Programme of USJ and Grants Unprecedented Global Exemptions

The ‘Accreditation Certificate’ of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) UK awarded to the B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree Programme of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) was presented to the Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Sampath Amaratunge by the ACCA Sri Lanka Branch Manager Ms. Nilusha Ranasinghe on the 2nd of December 2014. By this accreditation process the ACCA, UK has exempted the students of the B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree Programme from all nine subjects of the preliminary stages of the ACCA examinations and these students would have to sit only for the five subjects of the final stage of the ACCA examinations. This is the first Degree Programme of a Sri Lankan National University to obtain exemptions for all nine subjects. The ACCA (UK) has waived off the exemption fees of the nine subjects, initial registration fees and the first year subscription fees for the fourth year students of this Degree Programme.

The ACCA (UK) expects these students to register for the ACCA examinations during the final year of their Degree Programme, and these students are expected to sit for at least one paper of the ACCA examinations during a period of fifteen months from the time of registration. In 2013, from the fourth year batch 144 accounting undergraduates registered with the ACCA and in 2014 from the fourth year batch 121 accounting undergraduates registered with the ACCA. The Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC) of the USJ; Dr. U Anura Kumara, Head of the Department of Accounting; Dr. WGS Kelum, Academic Staff Members of the Department of Accounting; Prof. Mangala Fonseka, Prof. Samanthi Senaratne, Dr. Susith Fernando, Dr. Roshan Ajward and Ms. Sanjeevanie Cooray and also the ACCA Sri Lanka Branch Business Relationship Manager – Learning; Ms. Dilani Perera were also present at this event.
