The rising number of natural and organic products with herbal extracts and antioxidant properties is fuelling the growth of this market and one of the main challenges is food fraud, adulteration. DNA barcoding is a molecular technology that allows the identification of plant materials at the species level, by sequencing short stretches of standardized gene sequences from nuclear or organelle genome in an easy, rapid, accurate and cost-effective manner.
The goal of this workshop is the advancement of future research collaborations, Postgraduate Fellowships, student/staff exchange programs and the establishment of business incubators linking industry and academia with regards to the MOU that USJP signed with NYSYU.
The Workshop output will be a set of significant outcomes and active decisions that will be leveraged through over 150 participants drawn from within the Civil Service, CEOs of natural products industry, Entrepreneurs, Academics and Non-Academics, within the Island. More than 35 companies from the Private sector, 25 from the Government sector and 8 Institutions will be participating.
The Workshop will be chaired by two Professors from National Sun Yat-sen University;
- a) “Evaluating the genetic diversity for conservation and sustainable use of natural Chinese medical plant resources” by Prof. Yu –Chung Chiang
- b) “From Natural Products to Drug Discovery” by Prof. Chih-Chuang Liaw
This will lay the foundation towards the initiation of a National Centre addressing this issue and certification of natural products with international accreditation and eventually lead to the cessation of Adulterations of Natural Products in Sri Lanka.
It is a great honour to invite you to actively participate in the interactive session/workshop.
