SUMMARY:Tree Planting Programme organized by the CFS\, in collaboration with the DFES
DESCRIPTION:Tree Planting Programme organized by the Center for Sustainability\, in collaboration with the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science\, to mark World Environment Day 2025.\nThe event will take place on:\n Date: 7th June 2025\nVenue: Yagirala Forest Reserve\, Mathugama\nTime: 10:30 AM\n\n\n\nRestoring Yagirala Forest Reserve\nThis programme aims to restore an abandoned Pinus caribaea plantation by planting 1\,500 native trees\, while removing invasive species\, as part of our continued commitment to forest restoration and ecological stewardship.\n\nBackground:\nA deteriorating Pinus caribaea plantation in the Yagirala Forest Reserve is under threat from invasive species. Research indicates that this area lacks a viable native seed bank\, making natural regeneration challenging.\n\nBenefits:\nRemoving invasive species such as Dillenia suffruticosa and Clidemia hirta to create space for native vegetation.\nEnhancing biodiversity and restoring a healthy\, resilient ecosystem by planting a diverse mix of native trees and shrubs. \n\nJoin us in celebrating World Environment Day by taking action to restore our environment.\nWe’ll remove invasives and plant 1500 native trees to revitalize an abandoned Pinus caribaea plantation in the Yagirala Forest Reserve. \nLet’s restore.  Let’s protect.\nLet’s grow –  together \n  \n\n\n\nCenter for Sustainability\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Forestry and Environment Science\n\n\nUniversity of Sri Jayewardenepura\nGangodawila\, Nugegoda\, \n\n\nSri Lanka.\nPhone : +94 11 2881512    \n\n\n\n\nFax  : +94 11  2802937\nE-mail  : sustainability@sjp.ac.lk             \n\n\n\n\nWeb  : sustainability.sjp.ac.lk
