VoIP Service - University of Sri Jayewardenepura

What is VoIP Service?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular analog phone line. Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other people using the same service, while others may allow you to call anyone who has a telephone number - including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers.

General Introduction

This service enables staff members to make and receive telephone calls via a computer connected to the internet. All calls (made to /received from) through any intercom line in the University are free of charge.

A laptop, desktop computer or a mobile phone in which the VoIP account is installed acts like a normal telephone connection. Calls can be made from outside any landline or mobile in Sri Lanka to this number at local rates.

Eligible Categories

Eligible Categories of providing software based VoIP phone account to staff members are as follows.

  • Differently-abled staff members.
  • To locations where providing an analog extension line is not possible while data network connectivity is available.

Installation

Staff members need to install a free software on their computers to setup/activate this service. The software and configuration details can be downloaded from the links at the upper right corner of this page. Select the appropriate link to download the app version compatible with your OS and select "Configuration Information" link to see or download the installation and configuration details of the software. It is your responsibility to install the software in your computer. Please obtain assistance from a technical officer or system administrator in your Faculty/Department or Centre for IT Services (CITS), if you have any difficulty installing the software.

Account Information

You will receive account information by email with a username (extension number) and a password to be used with the software. Please do not reveal the username and password to any other party since you are responsible of your VoIP account. Please note that details of all calls taken and received from VoIP phones are logged.

Account Deactivation

Your VoIP account will be deleted once you resign or retire from the university or after the period given in the application form expires or if no activity is detected for 60 days.

Quality of the Connection

The voice service quality will depend on the amount of internet traffic in your network. Slow ADSL, wireless connections may result in poor voice quality or line drop. Those who connect from outside the university may experience interruption during a call due to bandwidth limitations of the Internet link.

VoIP system depends on availability of power to the Centre for IT Services (CITS) and may not work when there is a power outage.
