107th Commemoration of Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero at the Vidyodaya Pirivena

107th commemoration of the Most Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero was conducted on 4th May 2018 at the Maligakanda Vidyodaya Pirivena admits of Most Venerable Mahasangha. The Vidyodaya Pirivena was one of the prominent piriven (a monastic college) in Sri Lanka which was founded due to the efforts of Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero, in 1873. Ven. Thero is considered to be one of the pioneers in the revival of Buddhism and the tradition of oriental education during the 19th Century in Sri Lanka.

For the commemoration ceremony held at the Vidyodaya Pirivena, Most venerable Mahasangha, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya, Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and a great number of people including school children participated to pay their tribute to the Ven. Thero.

Special Academic Lecture on “Biography, Contribution and the Philosophy of the Most Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero” was conducted by Prof. Sampath Amaratunge; Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura at the commemoration ceremony.

At this ceremony, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, was presented with an honorary degree (Sammanopadhiya) by the unanimous agreement of the Vidyadara Sabhava of the Vidyodaya Pirivena, Maligakanda.

This is the first-time a Vice-Chancellor has been given such a privilege by the Vidyodaya Pirivena, Maligakanda. The degree symbolizes the service done towards the development of the world and the ‘Buddha Shasana’, it is also a token that denotes the commitment of the holder towards the development of these aspects.
