The University pays tribute to the Most Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Maha Nayake Thero, the founder of the Vidyodaya Pirivena in 1873.

The 110th Commemoration Ceremony of the Most Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayake Thero will be held on 29th April 2021 at the University premises.  The ceremony will commence at 8.30 a.m. with offering Amisa Pooja at the Buddha Shrine of the University and will be followed by the commemorative oration by Agga Maha Panditha Dr. Walpola Piyananda Thero, Chief Buddhist Prelate of United States of America (USA) and the Chief Incumbent of the Buddhist Temple, Los Angeles, USA. This ceremony will take place with a minimum number of staff while adhering to strict health guidelines.

The outstanding service rendered by the Most Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala  Maha Nayake Thero as far back as 1870s have paved way to create many educated generations bearing virtues and dedication. Had it not been for the Thero’s vision and mission, there would not be a University of Sri Jayewardenepura today.
