Foundation stone laying ceremony of the new building proposed for the newest faculty of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura; the Faculty of Engineering was held on 31st of December 2020 at 10.40 a.m. according to health guidelines with the participation of Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura; Ven. Dr. Ittapana Dhammalankara Maha Nayake Maha Thero, honorable Minister of Education; Prof. G.L. Peiris, Honorable minister of Trade; Dr. Bandula Gunawardene, Chair of the University Grant Commission; Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge (former Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura), Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura; Prof. Sudantha Liyanage and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering; Dr. Chaminda Konthesingha. In addition the registrar of the university, Deans of other faculties, heads of departments, academic and non-academic staff members participated in this auspicious event.
The project name is Science and Technology Human Resource Development Project (Design and construction of building and infrastructure facilities for Faculty of Engineering, USJ). The project was undertaken by Sanken Construction (Pvt) Ltd. The construction period will be 2 and a half years. The size of the land is 10 acres while the project worth is 3624.96 million rupees (tax excluded). This event marked another special milestone of the prestigious university.
