Helping Hands Humanitarian Project by USJ Taekwondo Team

The community project of “Helping Hands” which was organized by the Taekwondo team of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in collaboration with Colombo District Taekwondo Association was successfully conducted on 12th , 17th & 18th April 2020.

Considering the prevailing situation across the country due to the “COVID -19” which has been declared as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization, the members of the Taekwondo team came up with a humanitarian project to donate dry rations including other day to day essential items to the people in need. Therefore with generous donations of past and present members of the University taekwondo team and members of Colombo District Taekwondo Association, this was successfully implemented within the Kesbewa Divisional Secretariat.

Special thank goes to Mr. Premadasa Pathirana, the Kesbewa Divisional Secretary in providing the list of families who are in need due to this global pandemic. Then we have contacted them and interviewed in order to select 100 families out of them. All those families were underprivileged and there were 12 families who were under self-quarantine as per the advices of the responsible health authorities. And also Kesbewa Divisional Secretariat provided us the transportation facilities all 3 days. As well as we sincerely appreciate the guidance given by Mr. Pradeep Gamachchige, the President of Colombo District Taekwondo Association in organizing and implementing this project. Also we would happy to mention that both Mr. Pathirana and Mr. Gamachchige are Alumni of our University.

The main purpose of this project was to increase their mental stability during this situation as well as to improve their economical status. This was not only donating goods for them but also spending some time with them to let them know that they are not alone in this situation.
