The new building of the Institute of Allergology and Immunology (IAI), University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ), has received the GREENSL®️ Platinum Certification from the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL). Platinum is the highest level of GREENSL®️ certification and recognizes the Institute’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility. This is the first time USJ has received a GREENSL®️ Platinum Award for a building.
The award was received on behalf of the University by Acting Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, Professor Chandima Jeewandara, Director of IAI, and Registrar Mr. A. B. Weliwita at the Green Building Awards Ceremony held at the BMICH on 28 October 2026.
This achievement reflects the University’s commitment to sustainability under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Upul Subasinghe, together with the vision and leadership of Professor Chandima Jeewandara. Project management was provided by the University’s Capital Works and Planning Division, and construction was carried out by Limac Engineering (Pvt) Ltd.
Green principles shaped the project from its inception. The building was carefully sited within the University to make effective use of the available land, support student activities and minimize disruption to university life. Materials from the existing building were reused, while rainwater use and treated wastewater for gardening support responsible water management.
Designed with net-zero principles in mind, the building incorporates solar energy and other features intended to reduce energy consumption and resource waste. Corridors and rooms were carefully designed to minimize unnecessary electricity use. A link bridge connects IAI with the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences. Its greenhouse-inspired design provides a thoughtful connection between the two buildings and helps reduce reliance on lifts.
IAI and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura acknowledge the contributions of Limac Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, former Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Pathmalal M. Manage, the University’s Capital Works and Planning Division, led by Project Manager Mrs. Lakshani Mahasen, and the Maintenance Division, led by Works Engineer Mr. Asanka Karunarathna. This certification recognizes their collective efforts to bring sustainable building practices to an academic and research setting.
