The USJ Statistics in Sports Research Group Wins SILK Most Outstanding Sports Research Project of the Year award

The Statistics in Sports Research Group at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has been awarded the SILK Most Outstanding Sports Research Project of the Year award at the 8th SILK SPORTS AWARDS 2022. This highly prestigious event, organized by SPORTSINFO, recognizes the achievements of Sri Lankan sports stars and contributors who uplift the sports in Sri Lanka and ensure its future.

Led by Dr. R. M. Silva of the Department of Statistics, the USJ Statistics in Sports Research Group is the first research group in Sri Lanka to focus on conducting research related to Statistics in sports. Its formation was aimed at supporting university students interested in research that applies statistics to solve various research problems related to sports, while promoting and popularizing sports analytics research in Sri Lanka.

The SILK Most Outstanding Sports Research Project of the Year award acknowledges the quality research work conducted by the USJ Statistics in Sports Research Group. Comprising of academics, postgraduate, and undergraduate students, the group is passionate about exploring the application of data analytics in solving problems arising from various sports.
The award-winning research project was selected by a special 9-member SILK jury, co-headed by Prof. Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando and Dr. Harsha B. Abeykoon. The nominees for the SILK Sports Awards were selected by a nominations panel consisting of prominent sports media figures and related personalities.
