Creating awareness on Capital markets of Sri Lanka at University Investment Day

University Investment Day 2015

The Department of Finance organized “University Investment Day 2015” on the 02nd October 2015 at the Fayol Hall of Soratha Building from 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm. The main intention of the programme was to create awareness of the capital markets of Sri Lanka and to formulate an investment community not restricted to the university boundaries.

The dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Dr. U. Anura Kumara, graced the occasion as the chief guest with the head of the Department of Finance, Prof. Hareendra Dissabandara, Senior prof. Abeyratne Bandara, lecturers of the Department of Finance and various resource persons of the industry.

Senior Prof. Abeyratne Bandara, delivered the welcome address to a packed crowd stressing the importance of the practical exposure for undergraduates to excel in their careers, followed by the speech of the chief guest, Dr. U. Anura Kumara, who stressed the importance of events of this nature with special reference to the current financial and economic status of Sri Lanka.

Next segment of the event was the guest lectures from experts from the industry.Mr. Angelo Ranasinghe, Executive Director, Bartleet Religare Securities (Pvt) Ltd, started the proceedings with how to investing in capital markets in Sri Lanka. Next presentation was made by Mr. Nishantha Hewavithana, Head of Research, Colombo Stock Exchange on mechanism and operations of the capital markets of Sri Lanka. Then, Mr. P. Asokan, CEO, Comtrust Asset Management (Pvt) Ltd, addressed the gathering on the benefits of unit trusts as an investment vehicle. Then Mr.Suneth Perera, Manager, Capital Market Education and Training, Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka explained securities regulation and the role of SEC.The last presentation was made byMr. Ravi Abeysuriya, Group CEO, Candor Equities Ltd., through which he shared his thought on the current status of capital markets of Sri Lanka.

Penultimate session of the programme was the interactive Q & A session,where the panel of experts from the industry answered the questions from the audience. The students exhibited a commendable interest of the areas discussed and the experts also appreciated the enthusiasm of the students.

CDS accounting opening session by the Stock Brokers of the Colombo Stock Exchange and accounts opening of the Unit trust marked the conclusion of the “University Investment Day – 2015”, which undoubtedly the beginning of a series of events that link the university with the industry; capital markets of Sri Lanka.
