As a part of the government’s policy for expanding the range of choices in the country’s free higher education system, the government authorities have approved funds to be allocated for the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering for Sri Jayewardenepura University. Vice Chancellor, Prof.Sampath Amaratunge, and a group of members from the alumni met Hon.Lakshman Kiriella, the Minister for Higher Education, recently to discuss the matter.

Although the faculty’s construction has been sanctioned by the previous government, it was delayed upon various reasons. The discussion intended to expedite the project, as the university has been keenly fulfilling the requirements for the establishment of the faculty. With the expectation of the construction being completed, the university officials expressed that they would enroll students from next year.

Initially the Faculty will offer degree programmes in the major disciplines of “Civil Engineering”, “Computer Engineering”, “Electrical and Electronic Engineering” and “Mechanical Engineering”. Students who follow these core areas of specialization will also be given the opportunity to follow a minor area of specialization such as “Bio-medical Engineering”, “Next Generation Networks Engineering”, “Building Services Engineering”, “Mechatronics Engineering”, etc. This will not only allow an undergraduate to obtain the knowledge in an additional area of specialization but also to enhance the employment opportunities not only in the local industry but also abroad.
