USJ joins the Efforts to Digitize PCR Test Report Generation

Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, in collaboration with EchonLabs (Private) Limited developed, deployed and donated a comprehensive cloud-based Laboratory Information Management System to the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Angoda, Sri Lanka.
This project was coordinated by Dr. Ravindra De Silva (Senior Lecturer) from the Department of Computer Science, and was funded and developed by a young start-up that emerged from the Department of Computer Science, EchonLabs (Private) Limited. The development of the solution was spear-headed by Mr. Dulan S. Dias (Lecturer – Temporary) from the Department of Computer Science, who also Co-founded, EchonLabs (Private) Limited during his undergraduate years at the Department.
The deployed Laboratory Information Management System (LIMM) performs key improvements and enhancements to their current exhaustive manual system in generating reports of PCR tests for CoVID-19. LIMM is able to collect all the information regarding requests received by the laboratory for CoVID-19 PCR Tests, and are entered into the system by the Medical Laboratory Technologists. Once the samples are processed by the laboratory, the results can then be added into the system, where they will next be sent automatically for approval from a consultant. Once the consultant approves a report generated, then the Medical Laboratory Technologists will be able to print the reports. The solution also incorporates a 3-tier approval flow to ensure that the reports are true and accurate. This solution drastically reduces the to generate a report by facilitating a seamless report generation workflow.
In addition to that, the solution also supports the generation of a few key report types that can be used internally for the use of the laboratory. The solution is also accessible over the internet and can be accessed by authorized users in a secure, encrypted environment through their mobile, desktop or laptop devices. The centralized database that is created through this digitized cloud-based solution makes it easy for the management of history of patient’s previous PCR tests and their reports.
In the future, it is expected to incorporate advanced analytic tools, and contact tracing tools as well as addition of more test report types into the solution.
The launch event of the web-based software solution was held on the 17th August 2020 at the Board Room, IDH, Angoda, with the participation of stakeholders from all the parties involved.
