
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura has been ranked in the 801+ band in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2026, reaffirming its position as one of the leading universities in Sri Lanka and the wider Asian region.
Among Sri Lankan institutions featured in this year’s ranking, USJ is placed third, reflecting its steady progress in teaching, research, industry collaboration and international outlook.
The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2026 evaluate universities across the continent using 18 performance indicators covering teaching, research environment, research quality, knowledge transfer and international outlook. In the 2026 edition, 929 universities from 36 countries and territories were assessed, highlighting the growing competitiveness and diversity of higher education across Asia.
USJ’s inclusion in the 801+ band marks a significant achievement and underscores the university’s contribution to Sri Lanka’s higher education sector. According to the Asia 2026 table, six Sri Lankan universities are ranked, with the University of Colombo (501–600 band) and the University of Moratuwa and University of Peradeniya (both in the 601–800 band) placed ahead of USJ, positioning Sri Jayewardenepura as the third-highest ranked Sri Lankan institution.
USJ’s performance in the rankings reflects its continuing efforts to strengthen academic programmes, expand research output and foster international collaborations. The university has demonstrated balanced progress across teaching, research and industry engagement indicators, contributing to its recognition within the competitive Asian higher education landscape.
Commenting on the achievement, Vice Chancellor Professor Pathmalal M. Manage highlighted that this recognition aligns with USJ’s strategic vision to become a globally competitive centre of excellence in teaching, research and innovation. He further emphasised that the ranking is a testament to the dedication of the university’s researchers, academic and non-academic staff, the achievements of its students, and the continued support of its alumni and partners.
