Back to Nature Episode 6 on Common Food additives and their health impact will be conducted by Prof Jagath Wansapala, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Sri Jayewardnepura.

Date: on 11th March 2019 from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm.

Food additives are substances added to food to preserve flavor or enhance its taste, appearance, or other qualities.  Additives and artificial ingredients add little or no nutritional value to foods and can pose a threat to your health. Try to eat additive preservatives, and chemical-free foods whenever possible.

Examples of Food Additives
  • Preservatives: ascorbic acid, calcium sorbate, and sodium nitrite.
  • Color additives: fruit and vegetable juices, yellow 5, and beta-carotene.
  • Flavors and spices: ‘real’ vanilla or ‘artificial’ vanilla.
  • Flavor enhancers: MSG and yeast
  • Emulsifiers: soy lecithin, mono, and diglycerides
