26th International Symposium on Forestry and Environmental Sciences

26th International Symposium on Forestry and Environmental Sciences of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura held on 2oth January at the Senate Board Room of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The event was graced by the Chief guest Senior Prof.Sampath Amarathunga; Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Guest of honor, Ms. Anuk Baron; Representative of the Deputy Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage, the Vice-chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Senior Professor Lalin Karunanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura whereas several researchers, academia, professionals, and policymakers in the field of Forestry and Environmental sector gathered to discuss the latest developments in the field.

Prof.Sanjay.K.Sharma, Dean, Research of Jaipur Engineering College joined via zoom platform as a keynote speaker. Professor Upul Subasinghe, the Head of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences was the Symposium Chair and Dr.Thilak Chandratilake was the Symposium coordinator.

Senior Prof. Sampath Amarathunga referred to the capability of the higher education sector to function without any interruption amidst the severe pandemic situation. He paid his gratitude towards the organizers of the symposium as well.

Reminding 2021 as a year in which scientists had to bear a lot of burdens, Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage pointed out that scientists ought to consider the overall social scenario whilst implementing scientific knowlege in society.

Prof.Laleen Karunanayake briefed about the significance of the symposium in terms of developing Forestry and Environmental Areas in relation to the global crisis including the looming energy crisis. The significance of making the environment the first priority to not to make a negative impact on the environment when we make policies.

The conference tracks included forest natural resource management, biodiversity convention and management, waste management and pollution control, environmental economics and sustainability, environmental engineering, green technology, soil and water resource management etc.
