The Pharmaceutical Students’ Association of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) successfully carried out its “Hands of Hope” initiative as part of its community service and humanitarian efforts to support communities affected by the devastating Ditwah cyclone in Sri Lanka.
As part of this initiative, on 16 August 2026, the Pharmaceutical Students’ Association donated an Oximeter and a Multiparameter Monitor to Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital, supporting healthcare professionals in providing essential medical care to affected communities during a challenging period.
The initiative reflects the commitment of the students of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura towards extending support to communities in need and contributing to humanitarian efforts during times of adversity.
The successful implementation of the initiative was made possible through the collective efforts of the members of the Pharmaceutical Students’ Association, together with donors, volunteers, supporters, and well-wishers who contributed towards the programme.
The initiative involved extensive planning, coordination, communication, fundraising, transportation, preparation, and logistical arrangements by the student members. Their collective contribution enabled the medical equipment to be delivered to Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital to support its ongoing healthcare services.
The Pharmaceutical Students’ Association also extends its appreciation to the healthcare professionals and staff of Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital for their continued dedication and service to the community during a difficult period.
The Hands of Hope initiative demonstrates the role of university students in responding to community needs and contributing meaningfully to society beyond the academic environment. Through such initiatives, the University community continues to promote the values of compassion, social responsibility, volunteerism, and service to the nation.
