USJ Civil Engineering Program Receives Full Recognition from IESL: A Milestone Achievement

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) has granted full recognition for the Bachelor of Science of Engineering Honours in Civil Engineering degree program offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. IESL is the local signatory for the Washington Accord and the professional body which is responsible for granting recognition for four-year engineering degree programs in Sri Lanka. This verification by IESL underscores the commitment of the department in delivering high-quality degree programs in par with other recognized degree programs in the country.

Established in 2016, the Department of Civil Engineering has been making steady progress to attain this status within a relatively short period. The overall rich curriculum, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, modern library facilities, enthusiasm and commitment of the academic staff, staff-students relationship, efforts to develop open-ended problem-solving skills, sound feedback processes and loop closing mechanism, benchmarked research work, great support from the university administration with top-to-bottom communication, support from other faculties, and positive industry feedback on the civil engineering graduates are specially commended by the IESL. Department of Civil Engineering is the first department of the university to secure the full recognition from the IESL for its undergraduate degree program.
