A Message to the Students by Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences

Dear Students of Faculty of Applied Sciences

You are currently experiencing one of the most uncertain periods of your lifetime. Unlike in a war or terrorist attack, we are faced with an unpredictable and unrecognized enemy. As citizens of Sri Lanka — we, members and students of the faculty of Applied Sciences — are also facing the threat created by the COVID 19 virus. The best that we can do at this moment is to follow and obey advisors and directives issued by the Health and other relevant authorities to control the situation as soon as possible.

Further, we have noticed that some students are facing difficulties to meet their day-to-day needs. If any student is facing difficulties economically or otherwise, she/he can contact one of the faculty members for a help. In addition, I would like to mention that the lecturer’s union of the FAS (VSTA) has already gathered some information and managed to collect funds from the members who are willing to help. The initial donations were already made to 60 students  who are in need by VSTA. The programme has been organized by the VSTA office bearers (Dr.Pahan Godakumbura (0710466280), Dr.Sasani  Jayawardana(0712692287) and Dr.Duleepa Pitigala (0774105214)).

Thirdly, as we are in the progressive phase of the pandemic, this is not a time in which to divert our attention towards anything else. However, as you are currently at home, we thought of helping you in some academic activities when and where possible. Hence, some materials are made available through web based flatforms such as LMS, Google Classroom, Zoom, etc. for some course units by some academics. If you have the necessary facilities available to you, you could participate in some academic activities in order to enhance your knowledge. However, the faculty will rearrange academic programmes to achieve Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs), so that every student will have equal opportunities in learning.

I wish that students of FAS and their loved ones will persevere through this pandemic situation unharmed.

Wishing you good health,

Prof. Laleen Karunanayake
Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences
