Ms. Madushi D. Welikala of the Department of Computer Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura brought glory to the Country, University and to the Department of Computer Science by winning the Gold Medal of the Tertiary Category at the recently concluded APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Alliance) Awards, 2019 event held in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. Her project titled “DiabMate” was supervised by Mr. M. D. R. Perera, a Senior Lecturer at the Department.

“DiabMate” is a portable wearable device that observes and collects continuous variations in electrical characteristics of the skin using sweat through Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) readings from the user’s fingers and calculates wearer’s real-time Blood Glucose Level using Machine Learning model trained with a set of carefully chosen meta data. This non-invasive method of blood glucose monitoring eliminates the need for extraction of blood by pricking the finger and is also a cost-effective alternative. DiabMate Mobile Application facilitates wireless communication with the wearable and also provides a user-friendly and intuitive to help users stay ahead in the battle with diabetics.
