National and International Sports Achievements by USJ Students in 2021

National and International Sports Achievements by USJ Students in the year 2021 is as follows;

Weightlifting

Ms. Srimali Samarakoon from the Department of Sports Science, Faculty of Applied Sciences won the gold medal (women’s 45kg weight class) in Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship Uzbekistan in 2021.  She is ranked ninth in the world weightlifting rankings.

Athletic

Ms. Amasha De Silva from the Department of Sports Science, Faculty of Applied Science broke Susanthika Jayasingha’s Army record and won the gold medal in 200m (24.08 sec) while securing the silver medal in the women’s 100m event with a time of 11.59 seconds at the 60th Annual Interstate senior athletics championship 2021 held in Patiala, India.

Ms. Tharika Fernando from the Department of Sports Science, Faculty of Applied Science won the gold medal in Shotput (13.47m) at 99th National Athletic Championship.

Ms. Tharindu Dasun from the Department of Sports Science, Faculty of Applied Science won the silver medal in High Jump (2.08m) at 99th National Athletic Championship.

Football

Mr. Jude Supun was selected to represent the National Football team of Sri Lanka who will be participating in the qualifying rounds of the FFFA world cup 2022 and the AFC Asian cup 2023.

Gymnastic

Ms. Amaya Kalukottage from Department of Sports Science, Faculty of Applied Science won the bronze medal in Gymnastic at the South Asian Games 2021 held in Bangladesh.

Karate 

At National Karate Virtual Kata Competition 2021 which was organized by the Sri Lanka Karate-Do Federation in October 2021, the karate team of University of Sri Jayawardenepura participated in 7 competitors for individual kata events and won 5 bronze medals under the guidance of Sensei Rohana Greasman and Mrs.Deepika Priyadarshani.

At Sri Lanka National Karate Championship 2021, organized by Sri Lanka Karate-Do Federation which was held on 11th November 2021, the representatives of the karate team of University of Sri Jayawardenepura were able to win one silver medal and two bronze medals.

At the 1st Virtual Karate Inter-University Championship 2021 which was held on the 19th and 23rd of November, the representatives of the karate team of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura were able to win 3rd place overall female and 4th place in overall male winners with 2 silver medals and 3 bronze medals.

Taekwondo

At The Sri Lanka Open International Taekwondo Championship 2021 which was organized by The Coaches’ Association of the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation with the participation of more than 14 countries from the 26th to the 28th November, the Taekwondo team of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was able to achieve 2 gold medals, 3 Silver medals and 8 Bronze medals under the guidance of Coach Pradeep Gamachchige and Mrs. Deepika Priyadarshini.

At the Inter-University Taekwondo Championships 2021 held on 12th and 13th November 2021, The Taekwondo team of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was able to secure third place in the overall Taekwondo Women’s Division and second place in the overall Taekwondo Men’s Championship.

V.P.C. Nadeeshan won first place in the Male, Brown, and above belt division.

Heshanka won third place in the Male, Brown, and above belt division.

W.A.D. De Silva won second place in the Male, Green belt division.

A.D.N.N. Wijeratne won the first place in Female, Green belt division.

B.M.U.G.S.N. Basnayake and W.S.H. De Silva won the third places of the Yellow Belt Division.
