‘Pirith’ Chanting Ceremony and ‘Sanghika Dana’ (Alms-giving to the Sangha) at the Sri Wimaladharma Mandiraya

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organised an All-Night ‘Pirith’ Chanting ceremony followed by a Sanghika Dana (alms-giving to the Buddhist clergy) on October 20 and 21, 2026.

The religious observances took place at the Sri Wimaladharma Mandiraya. Organised under the leadership of the Heads of Departments and academic staff representing the six departments based within the Mandiraya, the event aimed to invoke spiritual blessings upon the venue and all ongoing activities of the Faculty.

The religious observances commenced on the evening of October 20 with the Venerable Maha Sangha being warmly received at the main university entrance. They were escorted in a traditional procession to the Sri Wimaladharma Mandiraya, where the All-Night Paritrana Pirith Chanting officially began at 9:00 PM. The spiritual rituals concluded the following morning, October 21, with a Sanghika Dana offered to 40 Buddhist monks.

The ceremony was attended by key university dignitaries, including Senior Professor Upul Subasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, alongside Deans of Faculties, the Registrar, administrative officers, academic staff, non-academic personnel, and students.

Organisers expressed their heartfelt appreciation to all members of the university community who participated and contributed to making this sacred occasion a success.
