Prof. N.G.S. Shantha Gamage Elected Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences

Professor N.G.S. Shantha Gamage was elected Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, today, at a faculty meeting chaired by VC Senior Professor Upul Subasinghe.

Prof. Gamage is a Professor in Physics at USJ, attached to the Department of Physics since 1997. He holds a B.Sc. Special in Physics with First Class Honours from USJ, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geophysics, Seismology from Tohoku University, Japan, completed under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Programme. He is a Chartered Physicist (CPhys) and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Sri Lanka (FIP, SL).

His research interests span geophysics, seismology, computational physics, physics of waves, disaster management, renewable energy, and nuclear radiation physics. He has led and contributed to research projects funded by the India-Sri Lanka Research and Development Grant, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and USJ’s own University Research Grants, covering areas from geothermal energy exploration to offshore seismic structure and nuclear security assessment tools.

Prof. Gamage has previously served as Head of the Department of Physics, USJ, and Chair of the Faculty Research Committee. He is a former President of the Institute of Physics, Sri Lanka (IPSL) and of Section E1 of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS). His other roles include National Coordinator of the Sri Lankan Nuclear Science Olympiad, Board Member of NAITA, and membership of several national committees connected to Physics education and examinations.
