Prof. Ranil de Silva awarded the certificate of Excellence

Prof. Ranil de Silva awarded the certificate of Excellence for the winning Research Proposal “Proactive Roles of Ceylon Cinnamon in Health, Leading to Product Development”

Prof. Ranil De Silva, Director, Interdisciplinary Center for Innovation in Biotechnology & Neuroscience, awarded a competitive national research grant by the Ministry of Primary Industries together with the National Science Foundation (NSF) on his multi-disciplinary and multi centre project titled “Proactive Roles of Ceylon Cinnamon in Health, leading to product development”.

The Ministry of Primary Industries together with Prof. Ranil de Silva, and NSF, initiated the Special project on Cinnamon focusing on value addition to the Ceylon cinnamon to increase the global market share of Ceylon Cinnamon. The project called for research proposals from researchers, island wide selecting 5 detailed projects to be awarded with 50 million rupee worth research grants. The inauguration ceremony of the project was held on the 28th February 2017, at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Primary Industries headed by the Hon. Minister Daya Gamage.

The said national project is expected to evaluate the curative effects of the Ceylon Cinnamon on protective effect of health leading to innovative product development inflowing the global market. The project consists of three main groups under the leadership of Prof. Ranil de Silva. Group leaders are Prof. Ranil de Silva/USJP; Prof. Bimali Jayewardene/University of Kelaniya and Dr. Jinasena W. Hewage/University of Ruhuna. Prof. Ranil de Silva’s group includes Prof. Priyani Paranagama/University of Kelaniya, Dr. Rajitha Gunarathne/USJP, Dr. Chayanika Padumadasa/USJP and Dr. Swarna Hapuarachchi/Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo. The National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Teaching Hospital, Kurunagala, General Hospital, Sri Jayewardenepura, and Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children are assisting the project through clinical trials.

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology (AIST), Japan will fully fund the evaluation of In vitro cellular effects of Ceylon Cinnamon Species on cell lines; Queensland University of Technology, Australia, The European Graduate School of Neuroscience (EURON), Netherland; University of Gothenburg, Sweden; The George Washington University, USA and University College of London, UK are also assisting this project with international funds, advanced technology through Private-Public Partnership.
