The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, USJ Launches the First Ever E-Banking Student Identity Card

For the first time in the history of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the E-Banking Student Identity Card was launched on the 12th March 2021 at the Administration Board Room of the University. The event was graced by the Chairman of the People’s Bank Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, Deputy General Manager, Process Management and Quality Assurance of the People’s Bank, Ms. Renuka Jayasinghe, Senior Manager, Ms. W.M.A. Sanjeewani, Deputy Manager Retail Banking, Ms. Nirmani Kaushalya, System Analyst of the People’s Bank Mr. G.P.R. Fernando, The Registrar of the University, Mr. A.B Weliwita, The Senior Assistant Registrar of the Faculty, Ms. Samantha Geeganage, The Senior Assistant Bursar of the Faculty Ms. Lalani Priyanthika

Understanding the need to digitalize banking and other transactions, Professor Shirantha Heenkenda took the initiative to introduce the new system. The merging of the student identity card and the debit card facilitates the undergraduates to engage in a range of banking activities without any hassle including withdrawing money using the e-banking student identity card, doing payments or purchases online, checking the status of the bursary and the Mahapola grant.

Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage highlighted in his speech that this exemplary initiative needs to be adopted by the other faculties as well, extending to all the internal, external, and postgraduate students of the university. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse, the Chairman of the People’s Bank denoted that this productive collaboration between two of the largest government institutions stands as a significant moment in the history of the University and the People’s Bank. He further stated that the People’s Bank would continue to work together with the university broadening banking facilities to the student community in the university.

During the event, the E-Banking Student Identity Card was symbolically presented to Ms. Yuganthi Ranshani a first-year undergraduate by the Dean of the FHSS in the presence of other dignitaries of the event.
