USJ students win at InnoServe International Innovative Services Awards 2021

“SaniFly” an innovative project carried out by a team of final year undergraduates following the Business Information Systems (Special) Degree offered by the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura won the second runners up position at the International ICT Innovative Services Awards (InnoServe Awards) 2021.

InnoServe Awards is organized in Taiwan by the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Computer Center of Ministry of Education, Chinese Society for Information Management and Taipei Computer Association. This year the competition was held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of their achievement, the team is due to be awarded NTD 30,000 (Approx USD 1100).
The talented project team consisted of Mr. Pramuk Hewawasam, Ms. Ishara Thennakoon, Mr. Dinuka Wijesundara and Ms. Nipuni Fernando. The project is supervised by Dr. Lasith Gunawardena, Senior Lecturer, Department of IT.

Mr. Pramuk Hewawasam, the Team Leader of the winning project commented ” We would have not come this far if it wasn’t for the unending support, guidance, and motivation from our mentor Dr. Lasith Gunawardena. We also would like to convey our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Mahesh Fernando, Head, Department of IT, and all the academic staff of the Department of Information Technology, USJ, for all the support given to the team”.

Dr. Lasith Gunawardena the project mentor commented “The project owes gratitude to the IIVCC (Invention, Innovation and Venture Creation Council) of the University and the Vice Chancellor for nurturing innovative projects at USJ through the Innovation Grants Scheme”.  Project SaniFly received LKR 50,000 funding through this scheme as a finalist of the Innovation and Invention Competition and Exhibition (IICE 2020/21) conducted by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.  The project was originally conceived by the students during the Department organized D-Hack 2020 competition, where it won first place. The project which involves Mobile, IoT and Machine Learning Technologies to uplift the life of the general public has also won runners up award as well as western province winners award at SLASSCOM Ingenuity Awards 2021.
