“The University of Sri Jayewardenepura located in the administrative capital of Sri Lanka is one of our leading national universities. The origins of the University date back to theVidyodaya Pirivena established in 1873 by the erudite Buddhist monk Venerable Hikkaduwe Sumangala Nayaka Thero as a centre of oriental learning. With the conferring of university status in 1959 it became Vidyodaya University under the Vice Chancellorship of yet another erudite Buddhist monk, Venerable Welivitiye Soratha Nayaka Thero. It was renamed Sri Jayewardenepura University in 1978. Today, it has risen to be the largest University in Sri Lanka in terms of the student population in five faculties of study, viz. Humanities and Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, Management Studies and Commerce, Medical Sciences and Graduate Studies. A Faculty of Engineering and Technology will be established shortly.

From its inception, the University has been guided by its motto‘Vijja Uppattham Setta’ (Among all that arise, knowledge is the greatest), taken from the Dhammapada. The vision of the University ‘Prosper lives through education’ calls for an enduring commitment to the well-being of people through education. Its mission, ‘Create and disseminate knowledge for the prosperity of the nation while preserving its cultural heritage’ encompasses searching for and testing new realitiesand disseminating knowledge, both existing and new, for the betterment of society.

In keeping with its mission, our goal is to transform the University of Sri Jayewardenepura into the flagship institution in Sri Lanka comparable with the best seats of learning in the region in the areas of teaching and learning, research, industry engagement and community development. With this in view, we are committed to continuously pursue the highest standards in education and research; forge fruitful links with industry and centres of research; and constantly interact with policy making bodies. Further, we are committed to ensuring that the fruits of our labour reach the wider society by eliminating poverty and raising the enhanced quality of living for all. We shall be driven by a passion for excellence with the focus on global demand and trends. This is imperative in a world which is becoming increasingly borderless and extensively ramified.

The world is changing rapidly creating new opportunities and challenges for the universities. In this emerging scenario our chosen way forward is continuous improvement and innovation in all our endeavors. Further, we shall adopt an integrated, holistic approach with the focus on value enhancement which forms the cornerstones of success in today’s increasingly complex and competitive environment. We shall direct all our strengths and energies to reach our cherished goal whilst adhering to high moral and ethical standards in keeping with our rich heritage.

Let us be partners in creating a brighter future for all our people.
