A much awaited breakthrough for Dengue

The Director of the Dengue Research Center of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura Prof. Neelika Malavige was interviewed by the “Ada” newspaper on 27th February 2017 regarding its promising medical breakthrough in the field of dengue.

Speaking to the newspaper Prof. Neelika mentioned that the dengue hemorrhagic fever resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and especially blood plasma leakage is triggered by the Platelet Activating Factor (PAF) and that her teams’ objective was to find a drug that would control that particular factor. Accordingly they had imported the drug “Rupatadine” with special permission from the Health ministry in order to experiment with and their research concluded bringing many positive responses.

She and her team therefore are hopeful that this research would in the future bring about a truly miraculous drug to our nation which is indeed in dire need of one.
