Postgraduate Programmes in Industrial Organic Chemistry – Intake 2026

15th September 2026

 

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Organic Chemistry, Master of Industrial Organic Chemistry and Master of Science in Industrial Organic Chemistry scheduled to begin in October 2026.

These three programmes are offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies through the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

  1. Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Organic Chemistry / PGDip (Indus Org Chem)

The PGDip in Industrial Organic Chemistry program offers a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge, comprising coursework (25 credits), practical classes (4 credits), and industrial engagement. It serves as a direct entry program and an exit option for MSc in Industrial Organic Chemistry and Master of Industrial Organic Chemistry degree programs.

  • SLQF Level – 8
  • Who is this programme for?

The program provides opportunities to obtain postgraduate-level qualifications for

    • Prospective students
    • Teachers,
    • Current industrial and research institute personnel with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in industrially oriented organic chemistry. 
  • Entry Requirements
    • BSc Special or Honors degree (SLQF 6) in Chemistry. 

or

    • BSc General Degree (SLQF 5) with Chemistry as a subject. 

or

    • BSc Special or Honors Degree (SLQF 6) with Chemistry as a subject. 

or

    • BSc Degree (SLQF 5 or 6) in Chemical Engineering/Food Science or Agriculture/ Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) with Chemistry as a subject/relevant subject area. 

or

    • BSc Honors in Fisheries and Marine Sciences or Marine and Freshwater Sciences (SLQF 6) with Chemistry as a subject/relevant subject area. 

or

    • Equivalent qualification recognized by the University Grants Commission.

or

    • Equivalent qualification accepted by the University Senate.

 

  • Duration – 1 Year
  • Medium of Instruction – English
  • Course Fee – Rs. 250 000/- (Payable in two installments)

In addition to the course fee, following payments should be paid at the time of registration. 

Registration Fee: Rs. 5,000/-, Library Deposits (Refundable) : Rs. 5,000/-, Library Fees: Rs. 5,000/-, Examination Fees: Rs. 1,500/-, Laboratory Deposits (Refundable): Rs. 5,000/-.

60% of the course fee at the registration and the balance within three months of the first year.  

  1. Master of Industrial Organic Chemistry / MIndusOrgChem

The Master of Industrial Organic Chemistry program provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in organic chemistry to prospective students and industrial personnel who wish to enhance their skills in organic chemistry. This course consists of theory coursework (25 credits), practical classes (4 credits), industrial visits, guest lectures, and case studies. Students enrolled in this program must carry out a case study related to organic chemistry/industrial organic chemistry (6 credits) under the supervision of a faculty member. This is a direct-entry program. This program is offered as an exit option for the MSc in Industrial Organic Chemistry program.

  • SLQF Level – 9 Masters (Coursework)

 

  • Who is this programme for?

This Master’s program provides opportunities to obtain a postgraduate-level qualification for 

    • Prospective students
    • Teachers
    • Current industrials, and research institutes personnel with advanced knowledge and hands-on experiences in industrially oriented organic chemistry. 

 In addition, this program provides qualifications for higher positions in private and public sector industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, food, textile, polymer, etc.

This program serves as an entry qualification for MSc and PhD degree programs.

  • Entry Requirements
    • BSc Special or Honors degree (SLQF 6) in Chemistry 

or

    • BSc General degree (SLQF 5) with Chemistry as a subject 

or

    • BSc Special or Honors degree (SLQF 6) with Chemistry as a subject 

or

    • BSc degree (SLQF 5 or 6) in Chemical Engineering/Food Science or Agriculture/Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) with Chemistry as a subject/relevant subject area 

or

    • BSc Honors in Fisheries and Marine Sciences or Marine and Freshwater Sciences (SLQF 6) with Chemistry as a subject/relevant subject area 

or

    • Equivalent qualification recognized by the University Grants Commission 

or

    • Equivalent qualification accepted by the University Senate.

or

    • Postgraduate Diploma (SLQF 8) in Industrial Organic Chemistry.

  1. Master of Science in Industrial Organic Chemistry / MSc (Indus Org Chem)

The MSc in Industrial Organic Chemistry program provides comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in organic chemistry for prospective students and industrial personnel seeking to enhance their expertise. The program combines theory coursework (25 credits), practical classes (4 credits), industrial visits, guest lectures, case studies (6 credits), and a one-year research project (30 credits) under faculty supervision.

The program emphasizes the application of organic chemistry to industrial problems, developing students’ critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Strong links with local industries through industry-focused activities provide firsthand exposure to real-world applications. It also accommodates individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in organic chemistry.

  • SLQF Level – 10 Masters (Coursework & Research)

 

  • Who is this programme for?

This program provides opportunities to obtain postgraduate level qualifications for 

    • Prospective students
    • Teachers
    • Current industrials, and research institutes personnel with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in industrially oriented organic chemistry. 

In addition, this program provides qualifications for higher positions in private and public sector industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, food, textile, polymer, etc. This program serves as an entry qualification for a PhD degree program.

Course Fee – Rs. 325 000/- (Payable in two installments)

Application Closing Date: September 30th, 2026

Rs. 2000/- of application fee should be deposited to the account number generated individually at the time of applying.
