Joining hands with the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation, the first ever 3 x 3 Inter University Basketball tournament was organized by the Basketball Association of Japura marking two exciting days in the university sports calendar. This was held on the 7th and 8th of May 2016 at the University courts, bringing together many a basketball enthusiast and teams equipped with talented players from the universities of Sabaragamuwa, Wayamba, Peradeniya, Colombo, Moratuwa and Uva.
Fighting for the women’s trophy were the teams, Japura A and UOC wherein the trophy was bagged by the Japura A team represented by Vishmi Dias (captain), Naduni Wataliyadda, Dinuja Caldera and Achini Ishani. J’pura Blacks and Colombo A on the other hand qualified for the men’s finals where after a game of intense sportsmanship, Japura Blacks emerged champions securing the men’s trophy of the tournament after a close fight with the team from UOC. This team was led by Suren prasanga while Nuwan Kalupahana, Charith Perera, Sajith Lakmal contributed towards its win. The team from Pera emerged 2nd Runners up in the men’s category, while the team from Wayamba secured the win of the women’s category.
With SLUG approaching, this tournament was indeed a wakeup call for all players to brush up and come back stronger and faster in due time. The J’pura 3 x 3 Invitational Basketball Tournament ’16 ended on a high note reminding all present the importance of continuous practice, team work and sportsmanship.
