International Industrial Mathematics Conference 2016

The International Industrial Mathematics Conference 2016 is not only the very first academic conference organized by the Department of Mathematics, University of Sri Jayewardenepura but also the second largest gathering of Mathematicians in the scientific community. This is organized as a  tribute Prof. Sunethra Weerakoon, the very first professor by merit in Mathematics in Sri Lanka for her 40 years of invaluable and outstanding service done to the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Apart from sharing passion in Mathematics to stimulate the scientific community and increase the enrollment in graduate programs, the conference was held to consider challenges faced by the public universities in Sri Lanka and to discuss the strategies to overcome them. This is because Professor Weerakoon believes that without efforts to revive the entire system, the country would not be able to get the return on the massive funds that are invested in the public university system. To acknowledge needs of the higher education system and to honor Prof. Weerakoon, Hon Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe graced the occasion on Saturday the 4th of June 2016 and delivered a stimulating speech expressing the interest in opening paths for collaborations between local and international universities. We are glad to note that the Prime Minister’s ideas were in agreement with the objectives of the conference. The very successful second day of the conference passed while leaving the last day of I2MC on June 5 2016.
