Opening of FAS English Corner

The FAS English Corner, consisting of an Academic Discourse Unit and a Reading Room, was declared open on 3 rd May at 10.30 am amidst a distinguished gathering of invitees at the premises of the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The nameboard was ceremonially unveiled by Prof Subasinghe, Acting Vice Chancellor of the university and the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Prof Subasinghe also declared open the Reading Room together with the former dean of the faculty, Prof Laleen Karunanayake. The Academic Discourse Unit was declared open by the current and former coordinators of the Ahead Project, Prof Hemanthi Ranasinghe and Prof Nelum Deshapriya, respectively.

This endeavour was funded by the Ahead Project and enables students to learn English in a conducive environment.

Prof. Hemanthi Ranasinghe delivered the welcome address while the Dean, Prof Upul Subasinghe noted the importance of imparting language skills to students. Prof Theshini Perera thanked the contributions of many parties, including the Ahead team, the Department of English Language Teaching, Ms Mihiri Jansz who served as the Concultant to develop the new courses.
The heads of all departments of the FAS and the department representatives were gratefully acknowledged.
